Event Registration - Behavioral Investing: Demystifying the Psychological Drivers of Global Asset Prices
Thursday, December 12, 2013
12:15 PM - 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time
[add to calendar]
Crowds move markets. Crowds are markets. Crowds are affected by the ebb and flow of news and rumor and their emotional reactions to this information. Knowing this is the case, how can investors profit? How can investors identify overreactions in the market fueled by the fear and greed of the crowd? Perhaps most interestingly, how can investors take advantage of the systematic information-related biases that exist within markets?
Behavioral economist, Dr. Richard Peterson, will deep-dive into the fascinating world of neurofinance, investor psychology, and information processing biases that appear to drive global equity prices. The convergence of natural language processing, cloud computing, and map reduce architectures (big data), allow the quantification of real-time information flow - text news articles and social media commentary - into numerical streams useful in quantitative analysis. This presentation examines studies performed on country and currency-specific sentiment and macroeconomic data feeds and concludes with a review of the impact of both country and currency sentiments on future global equity and currency pricing.
Richard L. Peterson, MD works at the intersection of investor psychology and financial markets. Through his firm MarketPsych (www.marketpsych.com) he designs sentiment-analysis models for financial markets, and he instructs financial professionals in the use of psychological insights to improve their investment decisions. His research has been published in Games and Economic Behavior, Journal of Neuroscience, and Journal of Behavioral Finance, three textbook chapters, and profiled in the financial media including CNBC, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and the BBC. He authored two award-winning books including "Inside the Investor's Brain" (Wiley, 2007), which was praised as "outstanding" by Barron's, and "MarketPsych: How to Manage Fear and Build Your Investor Identity" (Wiley, 2010). Dr. Peterson is an investment adviser who earned cum laude degrees in electrical engineering, arts, and medicine (MD) from the University of Texas, performed post-graduate neuroeconomics research at Stanford University, and is Board-certified in psychiatry.
